How to start trading forex

In this article, you will learn how to get started in Forex trading. Here you can learn how to choose a broker, set up a trading account, fund the trading account, how to use the funds, and other useful things when starting to trade Forex.

Having a regulated broker

When learning how to trade Forex, the first step is to have a secure trading environment. Protecting your investment in the stock market starts with choosing the right broker!

Trading in the financial markets is a regulated activity in most countries around the world and it is certainly a regulated activity in the world's financial centers such as the UK, USA, EU, Japan, Australia, Canada, and a few others. Regulated activity means that there is appropriate legislation and dedicated governmental or semi-governmental institutions that license and regulate financial brokers. These institutions will be your recourse if you ever have a dispute with your online broker.

If the broker has no license, you are protected only by the terms of the contract they offer, which is often random.

The online brokerage world is unfortunately full of unscrupulous people and for the same company name, there can sometimes be several companies. When opening a trading account, make sure that you are working with a regulated broker who is licensed, unless the opposite is your goal.

Otherwise, there are many trading account providers to choose from. Each one can match you to some unique criteria.

Brokers according to their performance

After selecting a broker, it's important to understand which order execution model the broker uses. A market maker, as opposed to a simple access provider, is a type of broker that creates a market for its clients by displaying actual price quotes but does not place orders in the interbank market. In this case, the broker is the client's counterparty: he wins when the client loses and he loses when the client wins. As your broker represents the market, he is the market maker.

No Dealing Desk brokers are also called ECN brokers and they simply work as access providers for their clients in the interbank market. This type of account allows for more market depth, have floating spreads, and longer order execution time. When an order is placed in an ECN account, the ECN broker processes it and forwards it to the market. This way, instead of trading with your broker, you trade with one of the millions of traders present in the interbank market.

For many traders, a market maker broker is not a good thing and they prefer to work with an ECN broker. But is a Dealing Desk broker a bad thing?

A short answer - if the broker has a license issued by a serious financial authority, like the FCA in the UK or the AMF in France - you can trust your broker. You can be sure that the broker does not manipulate prices or charts. Also, you can trust that the funds are in segregated accounts and that you will be protected if your broker goes bankrupt.

Another thing that is very interesting in trading is the speed of order execution. When the broker is a Dealing Desk broker, the order is sent to the broker and the execution takes place immediately. So, if the speed of order execution is essential to your trading strategy, having a Dealing Desk broker may be an alternative to consider.

The Forex Trading Account

Now that you have chosen a broker, we come to step two: choosing and opening your online trading account.

A trading account is similar to your current account, with one important difference - you can use the funds in your trading account to profit from the financial market. In this example, you can use funds to start trading Forex online.

Trading accounts come in a wide variety and most forex brokers offer several types of accounts at the same time.

The things to watch out for depending on your trading strategy and trading plan. Account types vary in their minimum deposit, the leverage offered financial instruments available, and other trading specifics.

Micro accounts allow you to trade with as little as 10 Euros using very small volumes, such as 0.01 or a micro-lot. This type of account sometimes allows leverage of up to 1:1000, which allows the trader to make very large gains or losses. The list of financial instruments on these accounts is usually limited to 20-30 of the most popular currency pairs.

Brokers also offer a "standard" account. This type of account allows you to start trading on Forex and CFDs, metals, futures. In other words, the majority of instruments available with the broker will be available on the standard account. The initial deposit on this account is likely to be a bit larger, starting from $100 to $200. The leverage is lower and the spreads are around 1-2 pips on the major currency pairs.

Sometimes brokers offer account types specially designed for very active traders, with lower spreads and with a higher minimum deposit, like 1000 euros and the leverage is very often lower, around 1:100 or even lower.

Sometimes brokers have VIP accounts with additional features. Deposit bonuses, no-swap, or no-spread accounts are offered to attract more affluent clients.

No matter what type of trading account you choose, make sure you understand the contracts and information related to margin trading.

Forex Leverage

If you want to learn about how to learn trading and trading-related topics on the forums, you will come across the question of whether leverage is a good or bad thing for the trader. It is important to know that the most important leverage on the types of investments is the one offered by the forex brokers. When using leverage, the line between good use and abuse is very fine.

It is important to understand how leverage works. Leverage does not change the number of points in the market, but it can change how much you will gain or lose on a trade. It all has to do with the size of the order.

It is true that with higher leverage you can trade larger order sizes. Overall, opening positions with a larger order size or opening multiple orders will result in higher margin requirements and higher pip values. Trading CFDs in excess is quite dangerous, as the trading account balance moves faster and the trading account cannot cope with the volatility of the market.

This is a textbook example of how not to trade online. If we keep the same trading account with low order sizes and good menu management and low leverage, the same negative scenario can occur. Too little leverage generates margin calls, even if the account is well-capitalized. Like the result, your account can suffer losses if the volatility is higher.

Equity in the trading account

First of all, you should never trade with funds that you cannot afford to lose. Starting Online Trading is similar to any other investment in the stock market and it is a risky business and only funds that you can afford to lose should be used. Trading with funds that one can afford to bet in the stock market helps the trader not to be stressed in his trading and allows him to approach this investment activity more calmly.

Most beginner traders are careful with their initial deposits and fund their trading accounts once they get a taste for online trading. This usually means two things: they have lost the initial deposit and they want to recoup the investment with new deposits, adopting a chit or double strategy. Sooner or later this strategy inevitably leads to disaster. In trading, excessive risk-taking pays off sooner or later.

Statistically, you have a 99% chance of losing your initial deposit if you go into trading without any trading strategy and any training in online trading. Not all orders are winners and the experience of taking losses is also a learning experience.

Loss is the price to pay for learning if you are motivated to spend the time to learn. The market is not your enemy. Your broker is not your enemy either. The most important thing in your trading is yourself!

The real question is: What have you learned from making a costly trading mistake and are you prepared to never repeat it? As simple as that.

How much does an Independent Online Trader earn?

Let's see how much an individual trader or home trader earns for his account, whether he is a day trader, swing trader, or even how much a Forex trader earns.

Unlike the institutional trader, whose salary is declared, the earnings of the independent trader are very difficult to estimate. Trading income is extremely variable from one trader to another.

Since online trading is open to everyone, the profiles of individual traders are very diverse and the average earnings of a trader cannot be representative. How much a trader can earn depends on some factors, including the background of the trader and the amount of time they spend trading.

It is logical to expect that the traders who earn the most are those who have previously studied market finance or who have previously worked in the banking or financial sector. Similarly, one can also expect that a trader who makes trading his or her primary activity will generate more income than a trader whose trading is a secondary activity for supplemental income. Of course, there are other parameters to take into account, such as the capital invested.

Can you trade without a deposit?

The question of how much initial capital is needed to start trading is one of the most common questions asked by beginning traders. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to have a lot of capital to start trading. But can you trade without a deposit?

Trading without a deposit on a demo account

Let's emphasize right away that the only way to trade online without a deposit is to trade on a demo account.

A demo the account is a trading account where you trade with fictitious capital, free of charge and without having to deposit an initial capital.

This type of account allows beginners to learn how to trade, to become familiar with their trading platform, and, in general, to put their stock market training into practice.

In addition to beginners, the demo account is also useful for more experienced traders. It can be used to test new markets, discover new instruments, or refine new trading strategies.

Minimum deposit: Start trading with as little as $1

Online brokers have different entry requirements and minimum deposits for opening a trading account.

Other accounts can also be opened as low as $100.

Forex Deposit: How much to invest?

Knowing how much to invest in the stock market is a common question among beginning traders. It is a very personal question because it is based on different parameters to be taken into account.

For example, you can start from the amount you need to live on. For example, it can be estimated that to live on his or her stock market earnings alone, an individual trader should be able to generate a monthly income of about 1,500 dollars, which corresponds to the gross monthly amount of the minimum wage.

In reality, everyone's needs and desires are different, and an independent trader may well be looking to generate much more. To know how much to invest according to the desired income, we can apply the following formula:

C = Rv / Rd

where C is the capital to be invested, Rv is the desired monthly income and Rd is a realistic monthly percentage return (10-15%).

Let's see how this works with our example of the minimum wage. So let's start with an estimated $1,500 per month in earnings and estimate without leverage. Now let's apply an annual return of 10-15%. This gives us a starting capital of $120,000 to $180,000.

As you can see, this is a far cry from the $1 or $100 minimum deposits required to open an account. Fortunately, there are several ways to increase your investment capital without paying more when you want to trade with $10. Let's take a look at them.

Deposit Bonuses and No Deposit Bonuses

In terms of no deposit trading, we also talk about a no deposit bonus. This type of bonus is by definition offered to traders with no deposit required. Generally, the size of such a bonus is modest and varies between 5 USD and 50 USD. The idea is that traders will be more motivated to trade successfully and to learn how to trade the foreign exchange market more effectively.

These bonuses can be used for real accounts as they help to get a good overview of the trading conditions. Note that this type of bonus is not very common. If you find one, make sure that the broker who offers it is trustworthy.

The no the deposit bonus is interesting for experienced traders when it comes to developing new trading approaches or strategies without risking large losses. Their main disadvantage is that they mostly attract novice traders. However, instead of learning about the stock market on a demo account, some novice traders start trading with a no deposit bonus on a real account. This can prevent them from learning the basic rules and risk management. This is why novice traders should not opt for this type of bonus.

There are also deposit bonuses, among which are the exchange rebates. This is a commission or part of the spread that is returned to the trader's account once he has closed a position. In some cases, the refund process is quite quick. However, some brokers tend to refund every month.

In general, one should be cautious about deposit bonuses, which can be as high as 200 or even 400%. There are many scams in the online market and the rule to remember is to choose a reliable and regulated broker rather than the most attractive bonus.

What is online trading ?

You may hear more and more about online trading, which is correct, because many people decide to start trading to try to increase their income, or even make it their career!

Online Trading

Trading definition: Online trading is simply buying and selling financial securities via an online trading platform or mobile trading application. These online trading programs are made available to traders, usually free of charge, by internet brokers. They are available to anyone who wants to invest in the stock market and trade financial instruments on the markets.

The activity of online trading consists of speculating on the financial markets, trying to take advantage of price variations of assets to earn money between the time of purchase and resale, or vice versa, as it is possible to sell a product that you do not own.

Online trading is a serious activity and should be understood as a profession, not a way to make big money quickly without risk and knowing nothing about it. In addition, indeed, all people who are prepared to work hard and participate 100% in this activity can conduct online transactions, and psychology is a daily challenge.

Origin of Online Trading

Online trading has grown considerably since 1990 due to technological advances in high-speed computers, affordable prices, and Internet connections:

- Internet: the growth of the Internet is staggering due to its accessibility, as evidenced by global statistics. People now use the Internet to trade and invest.

- Computers: Moore's Law indicates that the overall processing power of computers will double every two years, allowing the trader to quickly connect to the Internet and do their analysis on their computer.

These two trends have spurred rapid growth in online trading and democratized access to the financial markets like never before.

More and more people are now able to trade online and this trend seems to be growing exponentially. Especially since more than 1.7 billion people with cell phones are still excluded from the financial system, but not for long!

What is CFD Trading

CFD trading is the buying and selling of one or more CFD products.

To better understand CFDs in the stock market and their importance to the individual trader, we will list the characteristics of a CFD.

First of all, "CFD" comes from the English word "Contract For Difference", which means "Contract for Difference". It is the derivative product that can be applied to almost any financial product such as

- Stock market indices

- Forex

- Commodities

Explained most simply, the CFD makes it possible to speculate on the rise or fall in the value of a currency pair, an index, or even gold.

This type of online trading has become very popular as CFD trading allows for speculation on the rise and fall of many financial products such as stocks, commodities, or stock indices and above all with little capital!

What is Forex Trading

When we talk about the Forex market we are talking about the foreign exchange market or currency market. The currency market simply represents the respective values of currencies to each other.

Foreign exchange trading is the activity of investing and speculating on currency pairs, such as :

️ Euro Dollar EUR USD

️ Pound Sterling Dollar GBP USD

️ Dollar Japanese Yen USD JPY

️ Euro Japanese Yen EUR JPY

Forex trading is very popular.

This can be explained simply in terms of its advantages:

High Forex liquidity with large volumes in the currency market

Real-time Forex quoting (24 hours a day, 5 days a week)

So it's a market that's open day and night, allowing Forex traders in every corner of the world to trade the Forex rates of their choice. The Euro and the US Dollar both top the list of most traded currencies!

The foreign exchange market has low fees, making it very accessible for a novice trader and several features such as leverage, spread, and CFD contract size.

What is a trader?

The profile of the typical trader can be defined under three distinct:

1️ The analyst, the trader analyzes the context in which a particular instrument is found, using both fundamental and technical analysis, although it is common to see particular traders using only one of these two analyses.

2️ The actual trader, who buys and sells instruments such as CFDs to make gains, based on the difference between the buying and selling price of trading positions.

3️ The risk manager since the trader must above all manage the risk he takes on the markets to remain profitable and continue his activity.

You have understood it a trader must be able to wear several hats to carry out his online trading activity in the best conditions, but a trader is above all a professional of the financial markets, knowing how it works and how to interpret and read the price fluctuations visible on the trading charts to profit from them.

Long Term Investment - Better Opportunities for 2021?

Are you thinking about retirement? Or a new home? If so, you'll need a long-term investment strategy and this article is designed for you.

Long-term investing is giving up some of your resources in the present, for more than one year, to earn a return in the future.

Characteristics of Long Term Investment

The above definition implies some of the main characteristics of long-term investment.

Time horizon

It can be defined as the time during which a certain investment will be maintained.

The definition of long-term investment considers that the time horizon should be longer than one year, although it is common to think of longer time horizons when considering a long-term investment.

How are these horizons delineated? That should be your starting point. In exchange for what are you willing to give up the enjoyment of your money today?

Usually, the answer lies in the goal:

- Buying a home

- Retirement

- Children's education

Alternative, the 50/30/20 rule

If what you are looking for is a quick way to calculate how much you can invest each month without affecting your lifestyle, you can use the 50/30/20 rule.

According to this rule:

- 50% of your net monthly income should go to cover your primary needs.

- 30% will go to expenses of personal choice or whim

- The remaining 20% will be used to achieve your financial goals, i.e. saving and investing.

Therefore, the quickest way to calculate how much you can contribute monthly is 20% of your net salary.

Required Return

After knowing the final goal, the initial disposition, the contributions, and what is the objective of your long-term investment, the required profitability to reach your goal can be calculated.

The following table shows an example of how the required return on investment varies by changing basic investment parameters, such as a long-term investment calculator.

Initially, the goal of saving for retirement is considered as early as age 28. We assume that no additional initial capital is available and that monthly contribution will be $100 per month.

In addition, retirement is assumed to occur exactly at age 68, a time horizon of 40 years.

The financial goal will be to achieve an additional monthly income of $1,000 until age 90. Thus, the capital required at retirement to achieve the goal will be $264,000.

Subsequently, different scenarios were evaluated:

- Normal stage (1)

- Doubling the monthly contribution (2)

- Add initial capital (3)

- Reduce the time horizon too (4)

- Double the additional monthly income at retirement (5)

Differences from other Types of Investments

It is interesting to differentiate between short, medium, and long-term investments. If you are looking for a high return in the short term, you are probably looking for very high risk and high volatility stocks. In these cases, stocks that have recently fallen sharply could be interesting.

In the long, term, greater diversification of assets will be sought since the objective is to achieve a certain return with the least amount of risk.

Trading Strategies for ETFs

Did you know that the main purpose of an ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is to replicate the performance of an underlying asset such as a stock index? This industry has grown significantly to provide savers, traders, and investors with easy access to financial markets and in particular to specific industries such as artificial intelligence, robotics, alternative energies, commodities, currencies, and more.

The strong growth of the ETF industry can be illustrated by the total amount of assets under management. Indeed, this amount has grown from $417 billion in 2005 to $4.69 trillion in 2018. This is just one of the many reasons why more and more traders and investors are learning more about ETF strategies, which is also why you should do the same.

What are ETFs?

Exchange-traded funds or ETFs (also called trackers or index funds) are a category of financial products. They were created in 1990 in Canada to replicate the performance of a specific stock index.

For example, the Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF aims to replicate the performance of the S&P 500 stock index. Over time, the ETF industry has grown considerably, allowing investors to access financial markets that would otherwise be inaccessible to them.

For example, if an investor is interested in the growth of artificial intelligence (AI), they do not need to do a lot of research to find the right company or companies to invest in.

Instead, they can simply learn about the Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF and see if it fits their needs. This is because this ETF invests in companies that stand to benefit from the increased adoption and use of robotics and AI.

ETFs can be traded on different exchanges around the world, such as the New York Stock Exchange or the Paris Stock Exchange. Therefore, an ETF can be bought and sold during the trading hours of a stock exchange, just like shares of a publicly-traded company.

What is an ETF Strategy?

Developed by traders and investors, an ETF investment strategy is a methodology that aims to select the best funds to invest in, meeting their individual needs. In other words, this methodology helps make buy or sell decisions based on specific tools and key data.

The methodology typically involves different types of analysis, often derived from technical analysis and fundamental analysis.

✅ Technical analysis: This type of analysis involves studying historical stock price movements to predict the future direction in the short to medium term. Many traders also use technical indicators such as moving averages or the stochastic oscillator on the price chart of the ETF they wish to analyze. These indicators can help them identify price patterns that translate into buying or selling opportunities. You can learn more about technical analysis strategies later in this article when we discuss investment strategies for ETFs.

✅ Fundamental analysis: As the name implies, this type of analysis looks at fundamentals such as changes in global economic activity, central bank policies, and macroeconomic indicators. These indicators can be used to identify changes in trends in the global economy, technology, or even climate.

Most traders and investors combine technical analysis with fundamental analysis. However, more short-term traders such as day traders, who only keep their positions open for a few minutes or hours, focus more on investment strategies that only take into account technical analysis.

Fortunately, the same technical analysis tools used to trade financial markets such as forex, commodities, and stocks can also be used for ETFs.

How do I start trading an Exchange-Traded Fund Strategy?

Before moving on to strategies to start investing in ETFs, it is essential to have the right trading tools at your disposal from the start.

1. Choose the right broker

Investing in ETFs is very similar to investing in stocks. If you want to buy shares of a publicly traded company such as Apple, for example, you need to find someone who not only owns Apple shares but is also willing to sell them to you. This is where the broker comes in; he does this work for you.

Through the trading platform connected to your broker, your broker matches your buy and sell orders with those of other buyers and sellers through the exchange that lists the ETFs and shares of the company you want to buy or sell.

With a quality broker, you can buy and sell ETFs in seconds without having to meet the person on the other side of the transaction. It is important to understand that the broker you choose holds the funds that you use to trade and invest. It is therefore essential to choose a serious and regulated broker, offering the best possible security conditions and the highest possible safety.

2. Use the best trading platform for ETFs

Your trading platform gives you access to the essential information you need to invest in ETFs. This includes market news, historical price charts, current quotes, and technical indicators.

Trading Strategies to Consider

Below are three strategy ideas to get you started trading and investing in ETFs.

1. Invest in the stock market and its various sectors with ETFs

Among the different ways to invest with ETFs, the most popular investment strategy is to gain exposure to the equity markets.

For example, if an investor has a positive, and therefore bullish, outlook on the U.S. equity market, then he or she can simply buy the Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF. This ETF replicates the performance of the S&P 500 stock index and therefore allows an investor to have a diversified portfolio using a single financial product, in this case, an ETF.

However, investing in an ETF that replicates the performance of a stock index is not the only solution available to investors. Indeed, ETFs can also provide exposure to specific sectors.

This is how most American companies are categorized; by industry. These include retail, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, energy, technology, materials, healthcare, and many others.

For example, an investor may want to expose a portion of his portfolio to the healthcare sector through an ETF strategy. Instead of choosing a single company from this sector, another option is to go with the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ETF (XLV).

2. Invest in commodity ETFs

With commodity ETFs, investors can gain exposure to a wide range of assets such as metals, agricultural and energy commodities, and more. For example, if an investor wants to protect a portion of their capital over the long term with a haven asset such as gold, then rather than buying gold bars, they can simply invest in a haven ETF.

3. Access international markets (ETFs on emerging markets)

With ETF strategies, traders and investors can expose part of their capital to markets that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. Emerging market ETFs have gained significant popularity as many investors have become interested in the growth prospects of these countries.

How to trade with a Martingale Strategy?

Martingale trading is a much-talked-about strategy in the stock market, as it promises a foolproof result to the trader. However, in reality, many traders have simply lost their capital by trying to trade with a Martingale without understanding the risks.

In this article we will present how a Martingale strategy works in trading, with concrete examples, highlighting the benefits and risks of this trading method.

What is a Martingale? Definition and Explanation

A Martingale was originally a betting technique in gambling, which had the objective of achieving a 100% success rate. Its use became widespread in gambling halls in the 18th century, and casinos changed some of the rules of the game to counteract this strategy.

Historically, a Martingale involved doubling the amount of the bet each time it lost. Thus, even after a series of losses, a single winning trade could offset all previous losses and ensure a win.

What is a Martingale in the stock market?

In the financial markets, a Martingale strategy involves increasing the size of your investment following a price movement that is opposite to your position. Specifically, this strategy doubles your position size every time your previous trade loses until you have gains to show for it. The theory is that when you win, you will recover all of the previous losses, with an additional gain.

The trader invests in successive positions of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 120, 240...

A Martingale can be considered for any style of trading, be it scalping, day trading, or swing trading.

What does a Martingale Strategy do?

A Martingale strategy is not strictly speaking a trading strategy in the sense that it offers trading signals with entry points into the market to buy or sell. Rather, a Martingale technique is a way of managing your positions and order sizes. Thus, it is more of a money management strategy.

Martingale and the Principle of Downward Averaging

A Martingale strategy consists of lowering the average level of the investment by doubling the size of the trade each time the stock price falls, without closing the previous position. This is called averaging down.

Thus, with each new trade, the average level of the position falls, so that a weaker rebound in price is all that is needed to erase the previous losses.

Disadvantages of Trading with a Martingale Strategy

Martingale trading has two main drawbacks:

✅ The risk-reward ratio gets worse

✅ You need to have a lot of capital to sustain a long series of losses

A Bad Risk/Reward Ratio

One of the disadvantages of a Martingale trading strategy is that the risk/reward ratio is quite bad, but it can quickly get worse.

The risk/reward ratio is the ratio between what you risk and your potential profit. Generally, in trading, it is common for traders to look for ratios of at least 1:1, where the trader risks 1 to win 1, but ideally, it is more recommended to look for ratios of 1:2 or 1:3, where the trader risks 1 to win 2 or 3.

In a Martingale strategy, the trader starts with a fixed 1:1 ratio, which deteriorates as he has to double his position.

For example, in the first example of a Martingale trade, the trader suffers -750 points of losses after the fourth trade, only to win 50. Risking 750 to win 50 is not exactly what you would call a good risk/reward ratio, far from it.

In the case of the downside average, the trader risks up to 1,300 points, to win 250. Again, a very poor risk/reward ratio.

These two examples assume a series of 4 losses. The risk can easily become even greater with a larger loss series. The risk increases very quickly, while the expected profit increases only very slowly, if at all.

Some might object to this by saying that the risk/reward ratio is sacrificed in favor of a trading strategy that has 100% efficiency. This brings us to our second major drawback.

A Martingale Requires Large Amounts of Capital

The second disadvantage of Martingale trading is the amount of capital that is sometimes required to make a profit.

Theoretically, with a Martingale, a trader can win every time. However, if the losing streak gets longer, which can happen in the stock market, the trader may quickly need large amounts of money to continue doubling his position.

Martingale Warning for Beginner Trader.

🚩 The major risk of this method of Forex trading for the trader is that the market will continue in its initial trend for a long time, without reversal, until the trader can no longer react and loses his entire investment.

If a market moves in a trend, without reversal, the trader risks simply losing everything in one trade.

Often traders who abuse Martingale trading have a steadily rising capital curve until they suffer very heavy losses.

How to Build a Less Risky Martingale Trading Strategy?

There are two main ways to build a less risky Martingale trading strategy:

✅ Start with a minimum position size

✅ Use a Semi Martingale without doubling the position

Minimum Position Size

One of the drawbacks of a Martingale trading strategy is that it requires more and more capital as the losing streak continues.

The amount of money needed can quickly exceed the amount of money the trader can use.

To reduce the capital requirements, the trader can start the Martingale with a minimum position size, so that he can withstand a losing streak for a longer period in anticipation of a possible market reversal.

This can help the trader withstand a losing streak longer, but the risk of total loss is still present.

Using a Semi Martingale

A classic Martingale method involves doubling the size of the trading position after each loss. To reduce the risk and the amount of money needed, the trader can choose to use a Semi Martingale, where he multiplies the position size by only 1.5.

In the same logic, it is quite possible to consider a martingale without doubling the position size, but using smaller multiples: 1.4, 1.25, 1.2...

Generally used in long-term unleveraged equity investing, where a long-term uptrend is assumed, investors often seek to average down their investments without multiplying the position size, i.e. with a multiplier of 1.

Thus, when the price of stock purchased falls, it is possible to buy back the same amount of the stock to average it down, in anticipation of a resumption of the long-term uptrend.

What is an Anti-Martingale?

An Anti-Martingale is a Reverse Martingale. In an Anti-Martingale Forex trading strategy, the trader doubles the position size when he wins and halves the position size when the trader loses.

So instead of doubling the position size when the trader loses, he doubles the position size when he wins.

This reduces the overall risk, increasing the risk-taking in the main trend, and reducing the risk in the opposite movements to the trend, as well as having a better risk/reward ratio than in a Martingale.

The Forex Fibonacci Martingale and Pivot Points

Some traders use a variation of the Martingale by using technical indicators, including Fibonacci retracements and Pivot Points.

Instead of doubling the position every time a certain number of points are lost, they use Fibonacci retracement levels or pivot point supports and resistances to re-enter the market.

Tips for Trading with a Martingale

✅ A Martingale is a money management method and not a trading strategy

✅ Don't enter the market randomly but spot a trading opportunity with technical analysis

✅ Start the Martingale with a small position size

✅ Consider a multiplier of less than 2

✅ Set up a stop loss to stop the Martingale if the losing trend continues

✅ Stop the Martingale after a certain number of losses

✅ Practice the trading strategy on a demo account

Robot Expert Advisor (EA) Martingale

Traders looking to automate a Forex Martingale strategy can consider a robot or mql4 EA on the MT4 platform. An Anti-Martingale can also be automated.

It should be noted, however, that robots and EA's are freely available on the MetaTrader market, and no results are guaranteed. Therefore, you should always act with caution and test them on a demo account before considering using them on your account.

Conclusion

Trading with a Martingale is theoretically supposed to offer again in 100% of the cases, but this is at the price of important risks.

If the market moves against you for too long, which can happen at any time, at some point you may not have the capital to continue doubling your positions. This would expose you to very heavy losses, even the total loss of your capital.

It is important to remember that a trading strategy with Martingale is very promising, but as always in trading, and search for large gains is accompanied by large risks.

Therefore, great caution should be exercised by those who attempt the Martingale strategy, as attractive as it may seem to some traders.

If you do not have the experience to understand and control the risks and want to experiment with various trading strategies, the best way is to start in a risk-free environment on a demo account.

Trading with forex currency correlation

Forex currency correlation is the relationship between two currency pairs. A correlation of 1 means that the two currencies are perfectly correlated: if one goes up one point, the other will also go up one point. The negative correlation of currencies shows a negative relationship: if one currency pair goes up, the other pair goes down.

A correlation of 1 means that the two currency pairs are perfectly correlated, a correlation of -1 means that the currency pairs have a perfect negative forex pair correlation.

Does forex trading require a great deal of knowledge about trading indicators and investment strategies? Although most traders tend to focus on technical analysis or fundamental analysis, nowadays you also have to pay attention to trading psychology and money management.

A forex correlation is a very interesting analysis to do and should be part of your money management. Understanding currency correlation is very important today for a trader who wants to win in the stock market.

This article explains what currency correlation is, how to understand it, and ultimately how to improve your trading strategy by adding correlations between different forex pairs.

What is Currency Correlation?

It's easy to see why currency pairs are interrelated. If you trade the British pound against the Japanese yen (GBP/JPY), you are trading an offshoot of the GBP/USD and USD/JPY; both GBP/JPY currencies share a relationship with the US dollar and are correlated with the dollar.

While zero correlation denotes that the relationship between the currency pair is completely arbitrary.

It is important to note that the correlation coefficient is a statistical measure that does not mean that there is a causal relationship between the two variables. It can be observed over time that the currency pairs are correlated, it does not mean that there is necessarily a causal relationship between these correlations.

Changes in Forex Correlation

It is obvious that in forex there are correlations between different currencies. This is why knowing the correlation between different currency pairs is essential. Few brokers offer trading tools to see the correlation between currencies, yet professional traders at major banks use software that provides this information.

If one wishes to make an effective trading strategy and protect a portfolio or simply have a global picture of one's trading portfolio, it is important to track forex correlations.

Global economic factors are dynamic - they can and do change daily. Long-term correlations between currency pairs provide a clearer picture of the relationship between forex pairs. There are many reasons for a change in the relationship in forex. The most common are monetary policies, the sensitivity of certain currency pairs to commodity prices, as well as political and economic factors.

Currency and Commodity Correlation

A very good trading strategy is to use the correlation between currencies and commodities. Are you wondering what the relationship is between these assets? Some countries make a good part of their income from the export of commodities. In this case, the price of their national currency depends on the price of the commodity.

In this situation, we have developed countries like Australia and Canada, but the vast majority of emerging countries, like Russia or Brazil. When trading the Russian ruble, one cannot avoid looking at the price of oil, as a large part of the federal budget is derived from oil exports.

When you want to trade the currency pairs of these countries, you simply cannot miss the correlation. This is also the case with the Australian dollar. This is why you should choose a trading platform that has a commodity currency correlation tool, such as MetaTrader Supreme Edition.

Forex correlation calculator - currency correlation tool

The ideal way to strengthen your position is to calculate your correlation yourself. It seems complex, but it is simple. Use a spreadsheet, like Microsoft Excel and you can calculate the correlation. Download the historical daily currency prices and import them into an excel table.

You can then use the function in excel =CORREL (range1, range2). The most complete view of forex correlation changes is rendered using one year, six months, three months, and one-month data.

Although the relationships between forex pairs change, it is not mandatory to bring your numbers up to date daily. However, it is a good idea to update them once a week or once a month at least.

Each country has a different monetary policy in a different cycle, so changes in forex correlations may appear.

How to Use Forex Currency Correlation in Trading?

If you want to make money in the stock market you need to do some money management. Looking at the volatility and relationship between different financial instruments like forex and commodities is a key to successful trading.

Why are forex pairs correlated? It's quite simple. If you trade currency A against currency B, you are trading a derivative union of these currencies against the US dollar. While the reasoning is easy to understand, the behavior is not always so direct. Some pairs may move in tandem, while others may move in opposite directions.

The first step in understanding these changes is to look at a forex correlation chart. This chart shows the relationships between currency pairs over time. Knowing how certain financial instruments have performed in the past can give you trading ideas and analysis to make and can help you predict future market movements.

For example, strong positive correlations show an active link between the value of one currency pair against another.

Tips for Trading with the Currency Correlation Chart

Keep in mind that forex relationships do change and past performance is not always a guaranteed trading indicator of future correlation. However, this information can be used to develop your forex correlation strategy to minimize your portfolio's exposure to forex volatility that you can avoid.

Avoid positions that cancel each other out. If you see forex pairs moving in opposite directions almost all the time, you should avoid taking a position in one of them, because gains on one pair will be losses on the other.

Diversify your investment. Trading tools and especially the correlation calculator can help you avoid taking unnecessary risks. Be careful not to take too many positions on perfectly correlated currency pairs: in this case you increase your risk: if you are right on your trade you can be happy because you are a winner on all pairs, but if you make a wrong decision, it will be a loser on the other currency pairs too.

Forex hedging. Losses can be minimized by hedging currency pairs that have an almost perfect negative correlation. The reasoning is simple. If you have a position with one currency that is depreciating, the other currency, which is negatively correlated with the first one will probably be appreciating.

Hedging is a very good strategy for limiting losses, but it can limit gains as well because when you make gains on one currency pair, you lose on the other.

Trading Strategies with the Forex Correlation Chart

To trade on forex correlation there is no set trading strategy in advance, as correlations between currencies and with commodities change all the time.

Certainly, trading strategies based on forex correlation have developed with the internet age and the growth of computer power to make calculations. For example, 35 years ago it was very difficult to do this kind of calculation easily. However, in recent years it has become quite common to trade currency pairs for diversification reasons: up to 20 pairs with a correlation between -0.2 and +0.8.

This is also known as correlation trading. In this way, a trader tries to profit from the past market on multiple assets. The idea behind this approach is to eliminate any loss orders as quickly as possible. This way one can usually receive minor gains in a short period.

It is important to keep an eye on the currency correlation tables, as the correlation can differ greatly. For example, currently, the EUR/USD is correlated with EUR/GBP -1 on a one-hour chart, while the correlation over a year is 0.94. This is why currency correlation trading should only be done with a clear understanding of what the correlation is and how you can profit from it.

There are a few things you need to do before you can start trading forex. First, you need to consider a set of assets. The general rule here is quite simple - don't get into pairs that you know absolutely nothing about.

As with all other trading strategies, you need to have an overview of potential market movements. Building a trading portfolio can take time and it would be a mistake to jump into several assets without knowing them.

Long-term trading in forex is an expensive strategy. In forex, there are swaps, financing fees that reduce your profitability. This is why it is more interesting to trade short-term when you have a trading strategy based on the correlation between currencies. Long-term correlation can be used as a trading indicator and to confirm investment decisions.

Once you have a better overview of correlations and their possible impact on price, start investing. We suggest you start with the demo forex account first. The main idea would be to open around 10 positions immediately. Try to analyze forex pairs with negative correlation first. Then, when you see price movements, identify the direction of the stock market and remove losing positions from your portfolio.

A good tip to give here is to use a trailing stop loss, this will help you secure your gains. We hope you have enjoyed this article on currency correlation trading. Now it's time to try it out, open a demo account, and try to put this theory into practice.
